Toxic substance warning sign

The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven further nations to its public alert list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted beverages.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following several serious events including the fatal loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

While it is generated during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.

But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities representative a senior official said that each tourist should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, opt for trusted places and refrain from local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
