Four Apprehensions Made in Link to Louvre Jewellery Theft
Another four suspects have been detained in the context of the active inquiry into the recent heist of valuable jewelry at the Paris Louvre, per reports from the Parisian legal officials.
Details of the Newest Apprehensions
A pair of males, in their late thirties, and two female individuals, 31 and 40 years of age, were taken into custody this Tuesday. They all reside in the Île-de-France region.
Included in this group is considered as the last participant of a quartet of thieves that allegedly carried out the daylight heist, according to local news outlets. The additional three suspected thieves are already in custody and formally accused, authorities state.
Law enforcement has been granted as much as 96 hours to interrogate the suspects. No trace has yet been uncovered of the pilfered gems - valued at eighty-eight million euros - which were stolen on October 19th.
Previous Charges and Denials
Four individuals have already been indicted concerning the theft - three men and a woman, who similarly reside within the greater Paris.
One female, aged 38 was charged earlier this month with complicity in organised theft and criminal conspiracy aimed at perpetrating an offense.
Additionally, a 37-year-old male, was accused of robbery and illegal conspiracy.
The pair of accused, who have not been named publicly, have rejected all accusations.
The Method of the Robbery Was Carried Out
The heist happened when the group of four men used a stolen vehicle-mounted mechanical lift to enter the Galerie d'Apollon through a terrace near the Seine River.
The perpetrators employed a disc cutter to force open display cases which held the precious items.
The robbers remained within for a mere four minutes and made their escape on two motor scooters stationed outside at 9:38 AM, before changing to vehicles.
One of the stolen items - a royal crown - was lost during the getaway but eight other items of jewellery - featuring an emerald and diamond necklace that Napoleon I gave his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise - were appropriated.
Security Deficiencies and Fallout
It has been stated that the theft was performed by minor lawbreakers as opposed to organised crime professionals.
Soon following the robbery, it was revealed by the Louvre's director that the sole surveillance camera watching the Apollo Gallery was facing opposite the balcony scaled by the robbers to gain entry.
The president of the Louvre has later confessed that the establishment had not fulfilled in its obligations, but denied that security had been overlooked - emphasizing that from the moment of her appointment in 2021 she had been warning constantly of the necessity of increased funding.
Strengthened Protective Steps
Since the incident, protective protocols have been strengthened for French heritage sites.
Officials have relocated numerous highly prized jewelry items to the French central bank in the aftermath of the robbery.
