{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the events
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, safety personnel were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
