Oxford Union Future Leader Removed Following Conservative Activist Comments
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.
The motion against the student leader reached the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a college in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.
In a response, the student asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response categorically refuted that any person appointed by the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The letter criticized the society of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in spring.
