Jose Mourinho states he is close to being appointed Benfica manager after landing in Lisbon for talks with the Primeira Liga club.

Mourinho is poised to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked following Tuesday's Champions League loss at home against the Azerbaijani side.

The 62-year-old has only been without a club for less than a month after being dismissed by the Turkish outfit.

"The club formally asked me if I was interested. What coach says no to such an opportunity? Not me," he told the media after arriving in Lisbon. "After I was offered the opportunity to coach Benfica, I jumped at the chance to say that I'm eager, that I'd like to."

He began his managerial career with the club in 2000 but took charge of only 10 games and left after a disagreement with the club president.

Mourinho then made his name with FC Porto between 2002-2004, claiming six trophies - among them the Champions League in the 2003-2004 season.

Since leaving his native country in 2004, he has managed Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Spurs, Roma and the Turkish club.

The coach left the Istanbul side on August 29, two days after they were knocked out from the UCL play-offs by the Portuguese team.

Should Benfica appoint him, he would face the London club in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on September 30.

The team also travel to Newcastle United and welcome the Spanish giants later in the group stage of the tournament.
